Anthony was born January 28, 1924, the fifth child of immigrant parents, Francisco and Pasqualina Mascaro in Philadelphia, PA. He completed 9 years of school and to help support his parents and seven siblings, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp before he was 16 years of age. Upon his return he worked for Farber Plumbing Supply and then as a machinist at Superior Knitting Mills. At the age of 19, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He entered military service on April 3rd, 1943.

He was picked to be trained in a new field of warfare in the 10th Mountain Division. He was taught to ski, climb mountains and survive under freezing conditions. He was involved in the taking of Riva Ridge and Mt. Belvedere. Both hard fought battles. Many lives lost, but their victory was a turning point for a successful taking of these strategic places. He received a Purple Heart for being wounded and a Bronze Star for meretorious service in action. He was also awarded the rank of T/Sgt. Honorably discharged December 5th, 1945.
